This is an environment made in Blender and Unreal Engine 5 utilizing modular assets to build the environment. The inspirations for this project were JRPG dungeons and major metro stations, especially those in the US. This was a solo project, and a breakdown of the process can be found below.
For this project, I wanted to combine the wide open spaces and movement of a train station with the dreamy feeling of a PS3 JRPG dungeon. I started by gathering lighting, construction, and tonal examples.
I began the process by blocking out the space with primitive shapes to get an idea of what the space could look like and how I could iterate upon it.
I modeled out, UVed, and textured the modular pieces and then put them all together.
The hero asset for this project was mostly going to be math and VFX-led, so I needed to make sure that I blocked it out properly.
I started by making sure the planes were properly curved for the sphere, then got to work on making sure the movement felt organic.
For math, I always start by figuring the problem on paper.
Afterwards, it's simply a matter of crafting readable implementations.
I put everything together and made sure the asset felt cohesive. I refined the VFX by adding a nice glassy texture and making sure nanite was off to fix the sphere looking jagged.
To finish, I did a final lighting pass and made sure that everything looked as tight as it could before the final render.
